Local Schools Join Climate Teach-In

KALAMAZOO -- Kalamazoo College, the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center, Western Michigan University and other local
institutions are participating in "Focus the Nation," an educational initiative designed to teach citizens about climate change.

More than 1,500 groups nationwide are expected to host events on global warming. Eban Goodstein, of Portland, Ore., who
started the effort, describes Focus the Nation as the largest teach-in America has seen.

In Kalamazoo, KAMSC is holding an all-day teach-in on Thursday, with WMU scientists lecturing in various classes. Public events
there include:

* A 7:30 p.m. public lecture Thursday by Mark Bauer, owner of Bauer Power in Wayland, on "Sustainable Energy Options for      
Combating Global Warming," in the fourth-floor presentation center. Bauer recently installed a wind turbine at WMU.
* An open discussion from 8:30 to 9 p.m. in the KAMSC Commons.

KAMSC is located at 600 W. Vine St.; enter through the Dutton Street doors.

Kalamazoo College has planned a three-day teach-in running Wednesday through Friday, including these events:

* At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Daniel Lipson, assistant professor of political science, will show the award-winning documentary "An
Inconvenient Truth" in 310 Dewing Hall.
* There will be a live, interactive Webcast of a Focus the Nation program called "The 2 Percent Solution" at 8 p.m. Wednesday
in 103 Dewing Hall.
* At 1:15 Friday, Binney Girdler, assistant professor of biology, will discuss global warming in her physiology and ecology class in
226 Dow Hall.
* The anthropology course "How to Change the World" will hold a press conference about their campaign to encourage
conservation on campus at 4 p.m. Friday in Hicks Center.
* John Sarver, supervisor of consumer education programs with the Michigan Energy Office, will talk about "The Statues of
Renewable Energy Initiatives in Michigan," at 4:30 p.m. Friday in 103 Dewing Hall.
